About Our Crew
Alex and Michael first met in Ms. Schirmer’s kindergarten class at Chapel Hill Elementary in Gladstone, MO. From that time through our senior year of high school, we grew to be the best of buds, whether traveling for band contests, competing in track and field, spending multiple nights a week at the local Starbucks cramming for Spanish and calculus exams, or just engaging in general hijinks/tomfoolery/ shenanigans around town. Though we ultimately went to different colleges in the state, we kept in close touch, getting together at home in Kansas City and even traveling to each other’s campuses. But, compared to what came next, this period of our lives barely scratched the surface of our friendship…
About the 50 in 50 project
We have now embarked on what is sure to be a lifelong journey to visit all 50 states together and do a 50-mile ride in each one. What was the genesis of this idea? Well:
In 2013, Michael moved to Washington, DC, for school and work.
In 2017, Alex did a one-month med school rotation in Baltimore (about 45 minutes from DC).
In 2019, Alex matched with the same Baltimore hospital for his medical residency and moved back to the DMV area for a full three-year stint.
After Alex settled in, he began periodically trekking down to DC on weekends to explore the city’s numerous urban trails and sights (and tastes!) with Michael.
One nice, spring day, we did an unplanned, 67-mile, out-and-back ride on the W&OD Trail in Virginia. We had such a fun time with that one that Alex suggested we try finding a long ride in Maryland as well. And then we mused about doing even more states in the area. And maybe eventually…all 50?
The project has become a great excuse for us to not only see this vast and gorgeous country but also to continue growing our friendship in the process. We hope you enjoy following along as we check off each of these 50 states!
